The Ganesh Mantra is the universal invocation in the Hindu tradition. Every ritual, every new business, every wedding, every journey begins with Ganesh — the remover of obstacles (Vighna-harta) and the granter of beginnings (Vinayaka).
Of his many mantras, 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah' is the most popular. The 'Gam' is Ganesh's bija (seed) mantra — said to be his sound essence.
Wednesdays are Ganesh's day. Ganesh Chaturthi (August/September) is his great festival, when devotees chant this mantra in multiples of 108 each of the 10 days.
The cosmic primordial sound.
The seed (bija) mantra of Ganesh. His pure sound vibration.
To Ganapati — the lord of the ganas (divine attendants of Shiva).
I bow. Salutations.
Wednesdays and the 4th day of every lunar fortnight (Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi) are most auspicious. Ganesh Chaturthi (the 10-day festival in August/September) is the peak. Otherwise, chant before any new beginning.
Whenever you begin something new — a job, a study session, a journey, a business venture. Also as a daily morning practice to prepare the day.
East (for new beginnings) or north (for wealth and wisdom) are preferred. South is generally avoided in Hindu practice.
Yes. 'Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha' is the famous prayer. 'Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah' is a simpler form. All are valid.
21 days of unbroken practice (11 malas daily) is a common vow. For major obstacles, 40 days of 16 malas. Begin and end on the same day of the week for continuity.
