Mantra time calculator

Calculate exactly how long any number of mantras will take, based on your chanting speed.

5.0 s

Most chanters complete one Hare Krishna Maha Mantra in 4-7 seconds. Shorter mantras (Ram, Om Namah Shivaya) take 2-4 seconds. Longer ones (Mahamrityunjaya) take 8-12 seconds.

Total time 9 minutes

How to use this calculator

Set your chanting speed using the slider (or estimate: time yourself chanting 10 mantras with a stopwatch, then divide by 10). Then pick a target count - one of the classical preset numbers or your own custom number.

The calculator shows the total time required and breaks it down into manageable chunks (sessions per day).

Why this matters for sankalp planning

A sankalp is a formal spiritual vow - typically committing to a specific number of mantras over a specific timeframe. Common sankalps:

  • 1.25 lakh Mahamrityunjaya for serious healing - takes about 35-40 hours of chanting total, usually spread over 90 days.
  • 1 crore Hare Krishna - a lifetime aspiration. At 16 rounds daily (1,728/day) it takes roughly 16 years.
  • 9-day Navratri Durga jaap at 9 malas daily = 8,748 mantras total, around 5-7 hours over the 9 days.

Use this calculator to know what you are signing up for before you take the vow. Realistic planning is the foundation of sustainable sadhana.

Speed varies by mantra

  • Short bija mantras (1-3 syllables): "Ram", "Om", "Aim", "Shreem" - 2 to 4 seconds each
  • Medium mantras (5-8 syllables): "Om Namah Shivaya", "Om Sai Ram", "Hare Krishna" - 4 to 7 seconds each
  • Long mantras (12-16 syllables): "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya", full Maha Mantra - 6 to 10 seconds
  • Full verses: Gayatri (4 lines), Mahamrityunjaya (4 lines) - 10 to 18 seconds each
  • Full hymns: Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses) - 9 to 12 minutes each
