Mahalakshmi is the Goddess of abundance in every form - material prosperity, health, beauty, fortune, knowledge, and spiritual fulfillment. She is the consort of Lord Vishnu and considered the active power that sustains and enriches the universe.
'Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah' is her seed mantra. 'Shreem' is the bija (seed sound) that contains her complete energy. Even repeated alone, 'Shreem' is considered a complete mantra.
The mantra is chanted most intensively on Fridays (Lakshmi's day) and during the festival of Diwali - the night when Lakshmi is said to walk the earth and enter clean, devotional homes.
Complete text of the Mahalakshmi with Devanagari script, English transliteration, and line-by-line meaning.

Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah.
Om Hreem Shreem Kleem Mahalakshmiyei Namah.
Om - the primordial sound.
Shreem - Lakshmi's seed (bija) syllable; the sound that holds her complete energy.
Mahalakshmiyei - to the Great Lakshmi.
Namah - I bow.
The longer form adds three more bija sounds: Hreem (Shakti's seed - power and protection), Kleem (Kama's seed - attraction and fulfillment of desires).
The primordial cosmic sound.
The bija (seed) mantra of Lakshmi. Contains her full divine energy in one syllable.
To the Great Lakshmi - the supreme form of the Goddess of abundance.
I bow. Salutations.
Fridays are Lakshmi's day - most auspicious. Diwali night (Lakshmi Puja) is the peak. Also chant when beginning a new business, financial decision, or major investment. Early morning before sunrise or evening sandhya time both work.
The traditional teaching is that Lakshmi grants what serves your dharma. Devotees report shifts in financial situations, opportunities arriving, and most importantly a change in inner state from anxiety to gratitude. Outer prosperity often follows inner prosperity.
This same mantra is the classical choice. Some devotees add the longer Shri Suktam (16 verses from the Rig Veda) for serious business invocation. The seed mantra alone is sufficient for daily practice.
Yes. Lakshmi as the energy of abundance is recognized across many traditions. No initiation or background is required.
Lakshmi is the source of all prosperity. Kuber is the treasurer who distributes wealth. Both can be chanted - Lakshmi for the inner shift to abundance, Kuber for the practical flow of resources.
